Decking and Patios in Bedford
Decking and paving are only as good as what is underneath and where the water goes. Both of those are decided before the first board or slab is laid.
For decking we build a sub-frame at the right centres for the boards being used, on footings that suit the ground rather than on whatever was there, and leave it ventilated underneath so the timber can dry. Composite and timber behave differently, move differently and need different joint spacing, so we set out for the material you have chosen rather than to a habit.
For patios and paving, the fall is the part that gets skipped. A patio should shed water away from the house, and paving against a wall must stay below the damp-proof course so it is not bridging it and pushing damp inside. We set levels for that at the start, and if the only workable answer changes the design we will tell you early.
Edges, steps and the transition to the lawn are part of the job, not an afterthought. A patio that stops in a ragged line against grass undoes the rest of it.
